The Phoenix Concert Theatre in Toronto was all lit up on Tuesday, April 19th, when The Darkness from Lowestoft England hit the stage. Promoting their Motorheart album, released in October 2021, this tour takes them clear across the globe.
The support act for the North American leg of the tour is The Dead Deads out of Nashville; unfortunately, they were unable to perform on Tuesday due to whatever reasons. Since they were in Buffalo the night before, I assume it had something to do with the border crossing.
Even though I was disappointed by this news, it didn’t seem to upset any of tonight’s concertgoers. A DJ simply cranked out a ’70s and ’80s playlist and turned it up loud. People seemed happy enough to be able to enjoy more beverages and listen to some old classic rock ahead of The Darkness’ set.
When Justin Hawkins (lead guitar), his brother Dan Hawkins (rhythm guitar), Frankie Poullain (bass), and Rufus Tiger Taylor (drums) finally did emerge, it was an explosion of brightness that welcomed The Darkness.
Toronto crowds proved again that this city loves their live music. The venue was packed and people were singing and dancing and raising their fists in the air in approval. It was a great evening and The Darkness performed a solid set from their musical archives.
