Today, we help debut the latest Killing Bees single, “Won’t Be Long,” taken from the band’s forthcoming album. Titled Racing Towards Ruin, the ten-track record drops on May 10th via Tonequake Records and was produced by Andrew Scheps (Mars Volta, Audioslave, Adele). Killing Bees is the project of bassist and vocalist Nic Nifoussi and drummer Ray Mehlbaum, both previously of the band Automatic 7, who have a pretty rich musical history.
“Eventually, Ray and I decided to start a two-piece band” explains Nifoussi. “I was trying out a new sound using 2 amps and an A-B switch. Overdrive through one amp and playing a lot of chords to get a guitar-like sound. After years of playing together, we were already tight and used to writing together. The songs came quickly and easily.”
It was through Bad Religion’s Brett Gurewitz that the guys met Andrew Scheps, who worked on the group’s self-titled debut. Now, with Racing Towards Ruin, the members once again recorded at Scheps’ studio; drums and bass were recorded live, the only overdubs being vocals and some bass and accordion textures (Nifoussi is an accomplished accordionist).
Speak of the latest single, Mehlbaum states:
“‘Won’t Be Long’ is all about that sickass bass riff Nic had. We used to just sort of warm up with it when we were writing songs for the record. Eventually, that riff found its way into a proper arrangement and became a song. It’s fun to play.”
Thematically, the record deals with the dangers of love and politics.
