Matthew Mayfield Delivers Good Vibes with His “Die In A Ghost Town” Single Premiere

At this point in his musical career, PRIZEFIGHTER feels like it makes tons of sense as the title of Matthew Mayfield’s brand-new album. As we await the release of that record on May 17th, we have the new single “Die In A Ghost Town” to enjoy today. Featuring all of the anthemic moments you could hope for, this feels like the right song to introduce this album to the singer-songwriter’s dedicated fanbase.

For over 20 years, Mayfield has learned on the fly and found his own way forward. He has the scars to prove it, which PRIZEFIGHTER is a celebration of. Known for his fire and passion, Mayfield comes out swinging big time, illustrative of his dedication to his craft.

Describing the song to us, Mayfield states:

“‘Die In A Ghost Town’ is an anthem of both hope and a reckoning. It was written from the perspective of someone who has been stripped of their freedom but is hellbent on doing whatever it takes to get it back. When the dust settles and the opposition is fully defeated, he’ll still be standing strong. He’s a prizefighter, but the ‘prize’ isn’t money or notoriety. It’s the green light needed to keep persevering.”

Growing up in Birmingham, Alabama, Mayfield had to work hard to establish himself. But he took the bull by the horns and carved his path forward. He’s successfully navigated a complicated industry and has received a boost from getting his songs onto popular TV shows. Grey’s Anatomy, Hart of Dixie, Charmed, and Pretty Little Liars featured music from Matthew Mayfield.

PRIZEFIGHTER is his first new album since 2019’s Gun Shy. Much of this album was inspired by the trials and tribulations he encountered during this time. He had the pandemic to deal with, just like every other artist, but his personal life also turned upside down. A longtime relationship ended and Mayfield turned to music for an escape. Writing and journal-keeping became his outlet, a place for him to spew his thoughts and emotions. Many of these entries helped create a foundation for the album and its eventual theme.

Mayfield has demonstrated a great deal of resiliency to himself, which he hopes listeners can take away from PRIZEFIGHTER. The album is a testament to his spirit and artistic abilities. Why lay down and take it when you can use that adversity and turn it into art? It was there for the taking, and Mayfield took it and made something memorable.
