Roskamala – ‘Truth She Told’ [EP] [Album Review]
Singer-songwriter, producer, screenwriter, and actress Roskamala drops her debut EP, Truth She Told, a six-track collection of existential narratives describing the complexities of being human and how our experiences shape who we are.
Roskamala explains, “We all have our own stories to tell of good times and bad times. We tend to focus too much on the bad times, but one thing I believe in is hope. You will find this in every one of my songs if you have the right attitude and learn from our shared experiences. Life can be tough, but we all have the power to make it better and create a wonderful future.”
Born and raised in Thailand, Roskamala became an actress and TV host, followed by moving to the U.S. to pursue music, where she worked with Grammy-winning producers Ghian Wright and Robert L. Smith on her EP.
Entry points on Truth She Told include “Loving Mess,” featuring Lia Apa, travelling on vibrant tangs of pop riding a percolating rhythm topped by layers of coruscating hues. Apa’s plush vocals imbue the lyrics with sparkling, rainbow-like tones.
Dark and poignant, “Kiss Me Amnesia” presents the deliciously moody voice of Greenwich, whose intimate, vulnerable timbres infuse the lyrics with probing, aching textures that confront the impact of the past on the present.
According to Roskamala, “The message is that if you don’t make peace with your past, it will always haunt your future reality.”
“Chameleon,” a moving ballad, features an exquisite melody shaped by a delicate piano and soft, haunting strings. The breathy, sensitive vocals of Courtney Knott, simultaneously passionate and momentous, highlight the song with veneers of ardent emotional sensations, intense and introspective.
Flavoured by a variety of genres, including alt-pop, R&B, soul, and rock, Truth She Told offers an intoxicating assembly of songs.
