Before setting off on a solo career in 1996, Robert Allen, aka DownTown Mystic, paid his dues as a recording artist and hired gun for bands in NYC, playing at CBGBs, The Bitter End, Lone Star Café, The Fast Lane, and The Stone Pony.

He was driving down the road when he passed a small, handmade wooden sign on the side of the road that read, ‘next stop Downtown Mystic.’ It was an epiphanic moment, revealing the name of his musical alter ego.

Allen says, “I drove that stretch of road many times since but never saw that sign again. But it really touched on the unique experiences I’ve had on the spiritual plane. So I knew it would be something special to have that reflected in my music.”

DownTown Mystic’s new track, “Shadow Walk,” delivers a foretaste of his upcoming album, AmeriKarma, set to drop on April 7.

Opening on a slow and low thumping rhythm topped by rippling guitars, “Shadow Walk” merges flavours of Americana with psychedelic blues-rock, forming a dark, dreamy, drawling melody. Allen’s voice, a bit remote and rubricated by echoing resonance, imbues the lyrics with smoky, aching surfaces.

Mirroring a desolate mood, “Shadow Walk” is a visceral, poignant track, rolling and swelling on mesmerizing leitmotifs.
