For the members of For Closure, they never really meant to make it to this point. But they’re glad they’re here now. Enter today’s premiere of the band’s new single, “Hazy Mourning.” Featuring a fuzzy, lo-fi, post-punk, garage rock sound, “Hazy Mourning” stands out as a defining track for this still “young” act.

We use the term “young” loosely since the members of For Closure have been mainstays of the Southern California punk rock scene for decades. “Hazy Mourning” is their fourth single, the follow-up to the previously released “Carousel,” “Moon at Noon,” and “No Condition.”

With the story behind the song, lead singer Gizz Lazlo tells us:

“Have you ever seen yourself with someone so special that everything in your life changes and you start to think that things that never meant anything to you are now a priority? I’ve never had children. Never wanted them. I met a woman who is a lot younger than me and she showed me a new way to look at life. A wife and children seemed like the very thing I was missing in life.

“‘Hazy’ was written at a time when someone new in my life was inspiring me to try new things. Her energy, attitude, and views really seemed to make sense to me. We shared so much with each other, but even while being so happy on the inside I was losing who I was little by little on the outside. It wasn’t completely her fault, but we didn’t seem to fit with each other in the end. Too many lies that never needed to be told.

“All in all, this song is as cliched as it gets. Man finds woman, falls in love with her, dreams of a family with this person, feelings are lost, relationship ends, man is old, woman is younger, man dies, woman survives. The end…”

As a creative endeavour, For Closure only began last year. The band rose from the dissolution of the long-running San Fernando Valley act For Sale. For Sale was formed in the early 1990s, and they recorded music on and off until the members decided that the band had run its course a couple of years ago. For Sale’s lead singer, the aforementioned Lazlo, and guitarist Luis Estefania were determined to carry on. As the group’s primary songwriters, they had stacks of unrecorded material. Now, with no band to record it with, they changed course and formed a whole new act. However, forming a new band was only meant to facilitate the recording of this unreleased material. The plan was to get the recordings done, release an album, and maybe do one or two live shows.

Instead, the recording sessions went so well that the guys were inspired to hit the stage. They began rehearsing and have been working out their live show in Southern California. For Closure is now a full-fledged recording project and touring ensemble. With a full-length album to be released this year via Mindpower Records, the band members are eager to write another chapter in their collective musical legacy.
