We’re running with the “Chain Gang” today thanks to our exclusive premiere of Dutch folk singer and guitarist Robin Cause’s new song. The terrific track explores the rugged side of Cause’s life, depicting the life of a nomad which, in many ways, mirrors the life that he has led himself. No stranger to the road and the rigours of being a musician, Cause committed himself to the life of a travelling artist when he was only 19.

He eventually found himself in Northern California, a long way from his native Amsterdam, with only a backpack and a guitar to his name. Soon thereafter, he befriended fellow musician Darrell Dier, with whom he began to write music leading the pair on many a cross-country trip, including a venture to Fame Studio in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. It’s been a life of exploration for Cause and music has led the way the entire time, ever since he began to play guitar at the age of 12.

So, what are you waiting for? Check out “Chain Gang” now!

With new single “Chain Gang,” Cause has made the guitar the themed instrument throughout, laid over a bluesy bass line along with a chorus of male voices accompanying him through the chorus. It in many ways mimics what you would hear straight from an old chain gang itself. With a comment on the song, Robin stated, “‘Chain Gang’ was written in the south during a cross country road trip to Fame Studio in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. The song was inspired by R.L. Burnside, his rhythmic style combined with a Mozambique drum technique really keep the track moving.”

The song is portrayed through the eyes of a raven looking down upon prisoners in the fields of Mississippi. Unified together by one common thing is what gives these men a small sense of hope they are not alone. “Chain Gang” will appear on Cause’s forthcoming album with details to follow soon.
