Myra – “Valley” [Album Review]
Labelling them as thrashy metalcore doesn’t do Leipzig shredders Myra any justice because, as Valley shows, there is much more to their sound than that!
Finding information on Myra is quite a task considering the fact that, if you Google the name Myra in the UK, it brings up pages of information on one of Britain’s most notorious serial killers. Anyway, that aside, what little information I can glean from t’internet, Myra are from Leipzig, Germany and have been peddling what can probably best be labelled as thrashy metalcore, since 2005.
Obviously Germans are well-known for their love of heads-down thrash and Myra certainly seem to follow that tradition, going by the opening track on this album. It’s a style they seem well versed in as the rest of the recording demonstrates, even when they step it up to almost death metal levels on the epic “Crown”. Now the term epic is bandied about freely these days but, to be honest, listening to the likes of “Crown,” where the band seamlessly break up their ferocious sound with melodic sections or atmospheric breaks, there isn’t a more suitable word. Heading down a similar route to Parkway Drive on their recent offerings, Myra’s sound explores many avenues, not just brute thrash.
The term metalcore doesn’t really do this band justice at all but, then again, neither does the thrash label. Yes, both play a major part in songs like album closer “Demise” but, as you will discover, there is much more to Valley to excite your musical taste buds.
