After encouraging all fine and street artists, graphic designers and illustrators to submit their most creative and unique designs for the ‘Design the Next mau5head’ competition, deadmau5, in conjunction with the competition’s producers Talenthouse, has announced the grand prize winner is Lance Thackeray from the U.K. Thackeray’s ‘cheese head design’—which could be made with real cheese—will feature cheese holes and mesh indents, fiber optic whiskers (optional) and backlight eyes and mouth. It will be created and worn at a date on deadmau5’s Meowingtons Hax tour this fall. The artist will also receive travel and hotel accommodations to a show stop of his choice as part of the prize.

Meanwhile, his most recent offering, the Live @ Earl’s Court DVD (Ultra Music), depicting his December 2010 sold-out show at Earl’s Court in London, hit stores this week and is only available in North America. Even more dates have been set for deadmau5’s massive North American Meowingtons Hax tour, which is named after his mischievous cat Professor Meowingtons. His massive trek through the U.S. and Canada now includes a high-profile performance at the Virgin Mobile FreeFest in Columbia, MD. The Meowingtons Hax tour officially launches this Sunday, August 7 at Lollapalooza in Chicago, where he is an official 20th Anniversary festival headliner along with Eminem, Foo Fighters, Coldplay, Muse and My Morning Jacket.
Support acts Excision, Tommy Lee & DJ Aero and Zedd have been announced for various dates of the tour. Hailing from Kelowna, British Columbia, Excision has time and time again tested the limits of electronic music with vastly different sets that encompass a full range of genres. The shows are like no other—a virtual apocalypse of twisting and morphing sounds turn massive crowds into a frenzy, as virtual walls of bass are relentlessly impaled upon the crowd.
As DJs and producers, Los Angeles’ Tommy Lee & DJ Aero’s sound is dirty, filthy, nasty electro-house. The duo essentially remixes music live and on-the-fly when performing as DJs, while creating, manipulating and incorporating visuals into their live DJ sets.
Zedd also joins deadmau5 on dates of the Meowingtons Hax tour. Producing since 2009, he’s won two Beatport remix contests and released several official remixes for artists such as Lady Gaga, Black Eyed Peas, P. Diddy, Skrillex and Swedish House Mafia. His single “Dovregubben” held the #1 position on Beatport’s Electro House charts for four weeks. One reason for his rapid development is undoubtedly Zedd‘s uniquely detailed and highly recognizable, playful style of electro house, he is an artist to watch.
