The Skinny: Produced by multi-talented, Sugar Ray, drummer Stan Frazier, and Steve Fox (producer of Ashlee Simpson) The Dirty Heads’ self-released CD, Any Port In A Storm features a wide array of guest musicians, from legendary keyboardist Billy Preston to Nine Inch Nails and Korn drummer Josh Freese. Melding reggae, rock, punk, soul and hip-hop, The Dirty Heads have constructed a brilliant sounding CD that is a whole lot of fun to listen to. The first single, “Stand Tall,” was featured in the Sony Pictures movie, ‘Surfs Up’. They have toured with the likes of the critically acclaimed reggae/hip hop act 311 and Jewish Reggae DJ Matisyahu, and were part of the enormously successful Vans Warped Tour this past summer.
The thing I like the most about The Dirty Heads is their ability to take their various influences and meld them into as sound that is all their own. Granted there are definitely hints of Sublime, Eminem and even a bit of G Love in the mix, The Dirty Heads are not defined by or pigeonholed into any certain sound. The first time through the disc there is an element of surprise around every corner. I feel that the band covers a lot of musical ground in a short amount of time but they do it well and with style.
While Any Port In A Storm is indeed a killer disc, I feel it is in the live setting where The Dirty Heads shine the most. I had an opportunity to catch them live this year and the passion and energy they display on stage gives the songs a whole new dimension. If you have not heard The Dirty Heads yet give them a listen, there is something here for just about any fan of music. [ END ]
