Ships Have Sailed – “Walking Into Walls” [Song Review]
Endlessly gentle and beautiful, like a balm for the soul, Ships Have Sailed’s “Walking Into Walls” weaves its spell on listeners.
Los Angeles-based indie-rock duo Ships Have Sailed, made up of guitarist Will Carpenter and drummer Art Andranikyan, releases their single, “Walking Into Walls,” an exploration of the effect of relationships, not only human relationships but relationships with the world, our vices, and our emotions.
Carpenter explains, “We each represent a complex web of connective, shifting responses and reactions to every single ‘thing’ we encounter and especially those that we deliberately hold near to ourselves.”
According to Carpenter, the band’s name – Ships Have Sailed – does not reflect the famous expression “that ship has sailed.” Rather, it manifests a fresh, positive outlook on outcomes with grand potential.
Last year, Ships Have Sailed released a slew of singles, including “Silence,” featured on the Season 19 finale of Grey’s Anatomy, and “Get Loud,” a song that won the grand prize in the USA Songwriting Competition.
“Walking Into Walls” opens on a drifting, melancholic piano topped by introspective vocals. The song mirrors the profound feelings engendered by human interrelations. Radiant, oozing harmonies add to the subtle, poignant ambiance of the melody.
Endlessly gentle and beautiful, like a balm for the soul, “Walking Into Walls” weaves its spell on listeners.
