The Earthly Frames – “Cicatrise Dud” [Song Review]

At once avant-garde and déjà vu-like, The Earthly Frames’ “Cicatrise Dud” is sharp in the center with outer waves of phantasmagoric margins.

Musical mad scientist Gabriel Walsh releases “Cicatrise Dud,” the latest offering from his ever-shapeshifting project The Earthly Frames, and the first single from the forthcoming full-length album, Infranyms, out June 3rd.

“Cicatrise Dud” sees Walsh exploring the interface of robotics and human technology, merging a retro-futuristic onslaught of rock and pop, On the upcoming Infranyms, Walsh finds the delicious, sweet spot between new wave and no wave while balancing synthetic sounds with careful, introspective songwriting.

Infranyms is the seventh album in Walsh’s series The Rainbow Table — Walsh’s undertaking to create an LP for each color of the exemplary ROYGBIV aide-mémoire. Infranyms represents the color indigo.

A captivating experimentalist, each of The Earthly Frames’ previous albums depicts a dramatic stylistic shift, ranging from electronic to classical to what Walsh describes as “deeply weird rock.”

“Cicatrise Dud” opens on an electronic, dance-like rhythm topped by fluttering synths and dreamy vocals that take on distorted tones, imbuing the lyrics with a digital, high-tech milieu. Layers of oscillating, fluctuating synths infuse the melody with spectral surfaces, resulting in an unexpectedly alluring and almost hypnotic soundscape.

At once avant-garde and déjà vu-like, “Cicatrise Dud” is sharp in the center with outer waves of phantasmagoric margins.
