Spiders from Uranus Premieres Their Debut Album ‘Blow It Out!’
At once deliberately underdone and wonderfully tattered, Spiders from Uranus offer up blatant in-your-face punk rock on ‘Blow It Out!’

Sometimes, simplicity is way better than complexity. That’s true of the debut album, Blow It Out!, from Seattle-based outfit Spiders from Uranus. The album presents succinct, explosive bursts of punk rock, imparting stories of sleazy parties, nightmares, and shifty characters with purple bruised eyes.
Songwriter Chris Pugh explains, “I just wanted to simplify. I wanted to make it easier with the songwriting. It’s not rocket science for us. A feeling. Music of a certain era that I really like. Not derivative but influenced by all of the different things I’ve listened to over the years.”
A trio – Chris Pugh (guitar), Colm Meek (bass), and Scott Vanderpool (drums) – Spiders from Uranus grew out of bands like Young Pioneers, Pet Projects, Creep, Saba, Heliotrope, and Chemistry Set.
The album was recorded at Witch Ape studio in Seattle by Tad Doyle, who co-produced the record with the band. The process found Spiders from Uranus tracking mostly live, realizing a sound that feels like it is pulled straight from a tiny, sweaty venue.
Blow It Out! comprises nine tracks. Entry points consist of “It Don’t Love You,” a raw, Clash-like number, travelling on ragged guitars and a yummy, loose beat topped by roomy harmonies. An excellent pick because of its uncooked feel, “Fight” delivers hints of The Offspring, only more visceral and stripped-down. It’s the grinding guitars that hook you.
There’s a wicked nastiness about “Raccoon Eyes,” evoked by the reckless guitars and slouching vocals – “She’s just a faker.” “Nightmare” opens on a visceral drum shuffle, flowing into a blend of garage rock and surly punk-rock textures.
Seething with primal punch, “Miss Me” rolls out on dark, gleaming riffs riding a crunchy beat. Off-key harmonies imbue the lyrics with a delicious edge that decorates the song, in yearning impudence. At once deliberately underdone and wonderfully tattered, Spiders from Uranus offer up blatant in-your-face punk-rock on Blow It Out!
