Fastball – “Rather Be Me Than You” [Song Review]

Despite the vinegary lyrics of Fastball’s “Rather Be Me Than You,” the song captures a vibrant, carefree vibe that’s immediately cogent.

Twice Grammy-nominated pop-rock outfit Fastball releases their single/music video, “Rather Be Me Than You,” the first track from their upcoming ninth studio album, Sonic Ranch, slated to drop on Friday, June 14.

The album’s title was borrowed from the world-renowned Sonic Ranch Studio, where most of the album was recorded.

Made up of Miles Zuniga (vocals, guitar), Tony Scalzo (vocals, bass, keyboards, guitar), and Joey Shuffield (drums, percussion), Fastball is commemorating its 30th anniversary with a year-long celebration: a tour of North America and the release of their new album.

The tour begins with the band’s appearance at the Arch Ray Eclipse Musicfest, followed by a performance on April 10 at The Social in Orlando, Florida, and runs through early May. On May 8, Fastball will perform live in-studio on Good Day Austin. On May 9, ‘Fastball – Celebrating 30 Years’ will occur at the Parish in Austin, Texas.

Talking about the new song, Scalzo says, “This single, ‘Rather Be Me Than You,’ came together quickly from scraps of songs by both Miles and me.”

“Rather Be Me Than You” opens on a bright, irresistible riff riding a contagious rhythm exposing whiffs of pop-punk flavors. Scalzo’s smooth, evocative vocals imbue the barbed lyrics with nostalgic tones as he muses on the disparate status of a relationship.
