Kelly-Ann – “Let You Go” [Song Review]
Merging folk with tinctures of pop, “Let You Go” highlights the sensitive voice of Kelly-Ann as she reflects on the hurt of letting go.
Montreal indie-folk artist Kelly-Ann releases her debut single/music video, “Let You Go,” a track from her upcoming debut EP, set for release in early 2024.
“Let You Go” is a song about separating from someone you still love because the relationship is harmful, i.e., a demonstration of self-love to protect your heart.
Kelly-Ann explains, “‘Let You Go’ is a total exposure of one’s vulnerability. ‘Let You Go’ is loving yourself enough to leave everything behind, without looking back.”
Born in Montreal, early on, Kelly-Ann appeared on multiple TV shows and got to sing with Celine Dion, in addition to being part of a Christmas musical presented at Place-des-Arts. Recently, she competed in the seventh season of La Voix Quebec, making it to the quarterfinals.
“Let You Go” opens on a low-slung, tender piano topped by Kelly-Ann’s poignant voice, imbuing the lyrics with both melancholy and nostalgic regret as she reveals her aching heart. A silky, shimmering bridge precedes the rhythm’s entry, adding a slow, throbbing cadence and enhancing the mourning aspect of the music.
The video, directed by Charles-William De Melo, utilizes diffused contrasts of dark and light that regulate the emotional temperature of the visuals.
Merging folk with tinctures of pop, “Let You Go” highlights the sensitive voice of Kelly-Ann as she reflects on the hurt of letting go.
