We Are Sovereign

Hailing from Derby in England, metalcore/synth band We Are Sovereign hope to help you through the unpredictable crazy journey called life with their music.

By writing about some of the most defined chapters of life we all go through, We Are Sovereign will be using their music to cover themes of betrayal, loss, heartbreak, torment, reflection, acceptance and resilience. Formed in 2019 by vocalist Laura Russell, after years of suffering from gender dysphoria, and spending many years battling mental health, Laura had a life-changing operation to feel comfortable within her own skin.

The emotions of Laura’s experience are where a lot of the inspiration for the music, concepts and lyrics come from and, with the help of close friend Arran Bee, sought out band members as passionate as they were.

Having battled through many setbacks and uncontrollable disasters, the band has been tirelessly working away behind closed doors preparing themselves to conquer the music scene. Prepared to take on what life has to throw at them, We Are Sovereign are ready to take their music and message far and wide, starting with the new single “Nostalgia (Acceptance).”

“Nostalgia can be amazing and heartfelt but at the same time, it can be so dangerous and toxic. You have to know the boundaries of when it’s OK to reflect and when it’s time to let go.”

Released as a single on May 9th, the band has followed up with the powerful video for “Nostalgia (Acceptance)” and you can check it out now.

Speaking about the track, vocalist Laura Russell says:

“Have you ever had those moments in your life where you feel lost and fear the unknown? When you feel so overwhelmed you just long to go back to those moments when you felt safe and happy. The realisation eventually hits you that you can never go back and feel exact moments at that exact time in your life ever again. That’s a scary thought and eventually, we have to let go. That’s the difficult part. Nostalgia can be amazing and heartfelt but at the same time, it can be so dangerous and toxic. You have to know the boundaries of when it’s OK to reflect and when it’s time to let go.”

Look out for more new music in the coming weeks from We Are Sovereign along with a stack of live shows. There comes a time when people are ready for something different and, through their music, We Are Sovereign are declaring that they are the band to bring that.

I have an unhealthy obsession with bad horror movies, the song Wanted Dead Or Alive and crap British game shows. I do this not because of the sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll lifestyle it affords me but more because it gives me an excuse to listen to bands that sound like hippos mating.
