Empowerment. Strength. Honesty. Resolve. These are all appropriate adjectives to describe the one and only Summer Dennis. The soul/funk vocalist is back with a boom with the brand new music video for her latest single, “You and Me.” It’s the first new music to come from Dennis since the 2019 release of her Second Summer record which she recorded alongside her songwriting partner in crime, Bill Moore, aka Rhymes.
The sexy and sultry new video for “You and Me” is the perfect way to help wind down the summer as the days get cooler and the nights get longer. The song combines the best of pop, R&B, and soul to deliver a positive, uplifting love song that will make you feel good to be alive and well, and appreciative of those in your life on whom you can rely for affection and support.
Dennis spoke of the escapist qualities of “You and Me” and her intention to make a song capable of making you forget about life for a moment, “This song is really meant to be a departure into another realm where we aren’t in a pandemic, where we can be close to our loved ones, and just hold each other and love on each other. The isolation of quarantine left me desiring more love, more intimacy, more closeness… so while we can’t have that right now without killing each other, I figured I would write about it and uplift everyone during this terrible time. Also, arrest the killers of Breonna Taylor.”
Appreciating the simpler things in life is a common theme that runs through a lot of Dennis’ music. Upon its release, Second Summer was widely praised for its funky grooves and the singer’s down-to-earth approach to songwriting. Classically trained as a musician and a vocalist with an enormous range that can extend from first soprano through to alto, Dennis creates music that is firmly focused on female power and confidence. It really captures the right tone for society as it stands in the year 2020 which is a testament to Dennis’ ability to connect with listeners through current events and important social issues.
Fully comfortable in her own skin, the singer is out to inspire through positivity and femininity. With crossover appeal to listeners of R&B, soul, reggae, pop, and rock, you’d be hard-pressed not to find something likable about Summer Dennis.
