Mercury Slim – “Polka Dot Shoes” [Song Review]

Published

on

Mercury Slim is stepping onto the stage with his debut single “Polka Dot Shoes” from his upcoming album Love In A Time Of Dystopia. “Polka Dot Shoes” finds the casual conversationalism and folksy likability of Shakey Graves and Andy Shauf rubbing up against creative burnout in Los Angeles. A laid back folksy sound of acoustic guitar picking and steel guitar creates the backdrop for Slim’s soothing raspy vocals that carry the melody of the song.

“I wrote the song when I was feeling really down and kinda bummed out in the bourgeois nightmare that LA can be,” Slim clarifies. “It’s really just a song of hope to my friends who have felt the same way as me.”

Singer-songwriter Mercury Slim spent his youth roaming the state of New Mexico, never living anywhere for longer than a year. The voices of melodic misfits like ‪Jim Morrison‬, ‪Kurt Cobain‬, and ‪Nina Simone‬ became his constant companions, lending him the courage to blaze his own trail in music. He spent years after high school as a drummer in local bands, but a growing passion for songwriting pushed him to branch off and pursue a solo career.

After becoming a regular at venues around Sante Fe and Albuquerque, Mercury Slim headed west to try his luck in Los Angeles. Three years in the City of Angels have helped Mercury Slim refine his sound into its current iteration: an uplifting blend of psychedelic folk and R&B drawing from his psycho-spiritual and somewhat chaotic upbringing in the Southwest.
