If you’re searching hard for living proof that traditional rock n’ roll is not dead, then you have found the proper destination with our exclusive premiere of Alabama-based artist Matthew Mayfield’s new music video for “Gun Shy.” “Gun Shy” is the title track to Mayfield’s latest self-titled album, an eleven-track record released in March which you can order via Matthew’s official website. Mayfield is a talented singer and frontman, with experience as the lead singer for Moses Mayfield, a group previously signed to Columbia Records, a label which they released their debut album for in 2007.

With a southern background, born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama, there is a southern heart and soul to Mayfield’s music and vocal talents. Mayfield wears his rock n’ roll heart on his sleeve. Whether it’s an acoustic performance for an audience of one hundred or an energetic rock show for 3,000, he’s just as happy in either situation. As an artist, he has always been most attracted to the less conservative, more dangerous rock bands of the past, something which he has fashioned his music after. He doesn’t believe in censorship and loves that “bad” side of bands such as Guns N’ Roses, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Nirvana or Pearl Jam.

Mayfield doesn’t care about being hip or relevant; he simply cares about the music and what he thinks of himself. And he’s happiest when he’s on his own. Despite his experience in a major label band, he grew tired quickly of the production process and the egos that came with success. And even with his ability to rock, the fuck, out, Mayfield tends to be most in his element in a singer/songwriter type format. It’s also what’s been most popular with his fanbase. As a record, Gun Shy is the most eclectic record he’s ever created. It’s one of those something-for-everyone types of releases, with rockers, ballads, anthems, and folksy live-to-analog-tape stuff. It was his explicit intention from the beginning to make the album as all-over-the-place as possible because it’s in his nature to be diverse and full of different musical interests and styles. We all have different sides to the people we are and Gun Shy is illustrative to this fact of human nature.

From his previous album Recoil, here is the music video for “Indigo:”

Commenting on the title track to Gun Shy, Mayfield stated, “Gun Shy’ is a no-frills, tongue-in-cheek rock n’ roll song partially about love addiction: (he even uses an Allen wrench instead of a proper guitar slide, which provides this perfectly harsh, gritty tone, you can see it in the video). “I didn’t feel the need to get too heavy on the lyric side, I just wanted to plug in, turn up, and make some proper rock ‘n roll. These days when people see the word ‘gun,’ they automatically cringe. And rightfully so. But the definition of the phrase is ‘frightened by the sound of a gunshot. Apprehensive.’ While writing the verses, I had an image of this particular woman who on the outside acts overly confident and thinks she’s invincible but on the inside is terrified and extremely entitled. I don’t care what you have between your legs, entitlement is one of the most irritating qualities some folks develop.”

To accompany our premiere of “Gun Shy,” we also are helping to spread the word about Mayfield’s upcoming fall tour which will see him hit all areas of the United States. Beginning on September 19th in Washington, DC, the trek will take him all over the country, with shows currently scheduled all the way up until December. Gun Shy was recorded at Nashville, Tennessee’s The Smoakstack where he has recorded roughly 66 songs to date. It is a place that has in many ways become a second home to the artist. It creates an incredible vibe in which his music feeds off of. With a new album coming soon and a fall full of tour dates, Matthew Mayfield couldn’t be in any better of a place.
