Holy Fuck – Congrats – Album Review
Last Gang Records/Innovative Leisure
By Andrew Horan
Toronto electronic outfit Holy Fuck returns with their first album in four years and it was well worth the wait.
The band’s innovative approach to music involves creating electronic music with no computers. Though you would be forgiven for thinking otherwise. Holy Fuck creates a melange of sounds using other instruments.
The 10 track release grabs the listener off the bat with the thumping beat and throbbing keyboards of ‘Chimes Broken’. The song sounds like it could play over the credits of a Jason Bourne-style spy thriller.
Musically, the album varies between dance floor-friendly bangers and downtempo tracks. The aptly named ‘Tom Tom’ features a heavy beat with a wall of noise and barely heard, distorted vocals.
‘Shivering’ harkens back to the electronic music of the late 80’s and early 90’s and features the same distorted vocals heard on other tracks, something that does become a bit grating after a while. Thankfully, they don’t overwhelm the music . ‘Xed Eyes’ is another track that wouldn’t sound entirely out of place on playlist featuring electronic music from 90’s.
The album’s more subdued track is also its’ most accessible. ‘Neon Dad’ is a radio-friendly number that melds electronics with an almost indie rock flavor. They even turn up the weirdness with ‘Shimmering’, an Aphex Twin-style glitchy song.
Congrats is another winner from Holy Fuck. Expect to hear this album being played over the PA between sets at many music festivals this summer. Holy Fuck plays Field Trip at Fort York in Toronto on Saturday June 4.
