My review of The Lazys Canadian Music Week show at The Phoenix is undoubtedly biased, if only because I’ve loved rock and roll for as long as I can remember and these guys delivered it pure, unabashed, and filthy – exactly how I like it!
After playing with Danko Jones for their West Coast show dates, and a variety of other artists for various remaining performances; the 5-piece rock outfit from Terrigal, NSW Australia supported The Rival Sons for the CMW show. It was evident right out of the gate that they planned on making this show memorable, bringing with them a level of intensity and danger that I haven’t felt in the Canadian music scene in recent years.
There were long guitar riffs, there were obscenities, there was beer all over the place, head banging, jumping, animated faces – it was pretty much mayhem on stage, and reminded me of all the reasons I fell in love with classic/arena rock.
I was lucky enough to meet up with guitarist Matt Morris for an interview before the show, which you’ll be able to find up on the Lithium site soon. Although he was outgoing and fun, it in no way prepared me for the explosion of rock that happened on stage afterward.
The show wasn’t just about the music – although the music kicks ass – these guys were there to perform, to give the crowd exactly what they wanted to make every last minute count. It was seriously one of the best live performances I’ve ever seen. At one point Morris even got off stage and played guitar on the top of the bar, and ended with a shot of JD.
A definite crowd pleaser was their single “Shake It Like You Mean It,” which has been getting massive airplay across Canada recently. I only see upward projection for this band, and after seeing their live show, predict that they are going to be everywhere in the near future.
