Country-blues singer-songwriter, guitarist, drummer, producer, and video editor Johnny Pearl recently released his single, “Cumberline,” a song full of catchy flavours and country vibes.

While growing up in a small town in Ontario, Canada, where the only things to do were play music and work, Pearl did both. Pearl immersed himself in the music of Ray Charles, Buddy Guy, Junior Wells, and Muddy Waters.

A few years ago, Pearl recorded with members of the Grant African Methodist Episcopal Church, including sessions at Canterbury Studios, Number Nine Studio, Beyond the Beat, and Pineship Sound Studio. The Canterbury sessions were co-produced with four-time Juno Award winner Danny Greenspoon.

With four albums and numerous singles to his credit, Pearl has performed at Toronto venues such as the Horseshoe Tavern and El Mocambo, and had a house gig at the Squeeze Club on Queen Street. He has shared the stage with the Ozark Mountain Daredevils and Jesse Winchester.

“Cumberline” opens on sparkling, feel-good tones riding a tasty mid-tempo rhythm. Pearl’s countrified-lite vocals imbue the lyrics with effortless, appealing timbres that convey practical, philosophic surfaces. The mood of the melody is upbeat, even though the lyrics are stoical. Brimming with low-slung, beguiling energy, there’s a definite allure to the song.
