The Used (w/ Landscapes) @ Stylus (Leeds, UK) on February 13, 2015 [Show Review]
With only two shows in the UK since the release of their Imaginary Enemy album last year and set brimming with classics, it’s no wonder the atmosphere was electric as The Used returned to the UK.
Tonight, the main support came from Somerset’s own Landscapes. Despite technical issues in the beginning of their set, the band demanded and received the attention of the room with their brand of melodic hardcore and onstage energy. After the release of their debut album, Life Gone Wrong in 2012 and touring it relentlessly, there can only be great things to come. Watch this space.
The main focus of the night was, of course, the welcome return of The Used after releasing their newest album Imaginary Enemy last year with only a Download Festival appearance and one off show at London’s Scala to promote it. Back with a full 11 date UK tour, it’s surprising to see the set list full to the brim with classic tracks, though not an unhappy surprise for the numerous die-hard fans in the audience. With only a handful of new songs, including their opening song “Cry” The Used worked their way through over a decade of their back catalogue.
From the moment the band walked on stage, the atmosphere was electric. Frontman Bert McCracken was, as ever, full of rip roaring energy and gained complete control of the crowd from the get-go. They hung on to every clap, every word, every gesture to sing along. Classics like “Taste Of Ink” and “Take It Away” had the whole room moving, while the slightly more mellow “All That I’ve Got” had everyone singing along, and even reduced a few fans to tears.
Closing the night with “On My Own” and “Box of Sharp Objects,” the band performed with the sort of sincerity and love for their music that is outstanding to witness, regardless of tastes or genres. Their energy was infectious and almost everyone in the room looked privileged to be there to see it. The Used are clearly a band whose fans are as dedicated to their music as the band themselves, and it was great to be a part of that.
