Album Review
Endrah – “The Culling”
Brazil’s Endrah state they “combine the brutality and attack of death metal with hardcore aggression.” I’m assuming they chose this way of describing themselves as deathcore has become a bit of a “dirty word” with most metalheads over the age of 18.
Brazil’s Endrah state they “combine the brutality and attack of death metal with hardcore aggression.” I’m assuming they chose this way of describing themselves as deathcore has become a bit of a “dirty word” with most metalheads over the age of 18. Despite the fact the band claims to have death metal elements; however, in reality they’re closer to a metalcore/groove metal band a la Lamb of God. That being said, I’m not a fan of metalcore or deathcore, groove metal or any type of “core” for that matter, so a band that plays this style would have to be pretty damned unique to win me over.
So, is Endrah unique? Not at all. They have the chugga chugga rhythms, the breakdowns, the slams, the Blythe-esque half screamed and half growled vocals, and all the other stuff that the core crowd loves… and that I can’t stand. That being said they are extremely good at what they do, it’s just not my thing.
Like a rock fan trying to review a disco album, it’s really hard to be objective when faced with a style that you hate. So, let’s just say that if you’re into deathcore, groove metal, or metalcore you’ll probably love this. In that case change my 3.5 to a high 7 or even an 8. If you’re not, keep the 3.5.
