Baptists – “Bushcraft” [Album Review]
I was first exposed to Vancouver’s Baptists earlier this year when I saw them open for Skeletonwitch at the Biltmore Cabaret. At the time I was quite impressed by the band: their blend of metal and hardcore was an excellent warm-up to the headliners. Usually I hate this style of music, but the band’s live show was so energetic that it was hard not to like them.

I saw the band again a couple of months ago when they opened for Corrosion of Conformity. Even though they started early and only a few people were in the audience, they still played like they were the headliners. The vocalist flailed about and jumped into the audience, screaming like a madman – in short, they were awesome. When I found out Bushcraft was being released, I jumped at the opportunity to review the album as I was curious to know how their sound would translate to record.
While I can’t say that Bushcraft adequately conveys the sheer brutality of the band’s live assaults, I can confirm that it is a decent album that shows a group with a lot of promise. Produced by Kurt Ballou, Bushcraft is something that a Converge fan would eat right up. Noisy and viscous, the band pummel the listener with short blasts of hate.
While Bushcraft is a decent release, to really appreciate the band you need to see them in a live setting. In the meantime, check the album out, and when they show up in your town, go see them. You will not be disappointed!
