Unearth

The March (10.14.2008)

It has been two years since Unearth released their powerhouse of a record, III: In The Eyes Of Fire and to be honest, considering the dramatic, sonic changes found on that album, I didn’t quite know how much the band could continue to evolve. To my utter astonishment, with the release of The March, Unearth has broken new ground yet again. These guys are now solidified as much more than modern Metal pioneers, there are also kings of evolution!

The album opens up with their latest single, “My Will Be Done” and by now, I’m pretty sure just about every Unearth-ite has heard this track; whether or not they realize it. The song is traditional for Unearth; breakdowns, brutality, and Trevor’s hardcore style vocals all meld nicely together to create that rich wall of sound we have come to expect from these dudes. The major difference this time however, is the shred during the intro. There is no doubt in my mind that the lead could melt a baby’s face off in seconds… the intro and guitars seem to rip and shred faster than ever before.

That said, I did notice the presence of many more leads throughout the entire album. This seemingly little difference can distinguish great bands from shit bands, or conversely, can turn a great band into a shit band. Luckily, this leap worked in Unearth’s favour, ultimately infusing their sound with even more of a Thrash feel. Moreover, the rhythm guitar pieces also seem to be heavier than previous albums; again pushing the band’s sound to new heights.

Lyrically, The March is just what you would expect of Trevor Phipps and covers for example the different sides of the human race; the pure side versus the corrupt side (a concept that has been done several times, but has not been pulled off this nicely in quite some time). I seems as if Trevor has his own perception of humanity; that if we blur the lines of religion and racial differences, the human race can finally be united as it was intended to be. In any case, we see that the majority of the people tend to make these lines more prevalent and harsh than necessary, making unity near impossible.

The final jam on the album ends with a static-type sound which leads nicely into a hidden track. Let me tell you I absolutely love it when bands toss in a hidden track. It’s all over, then BOOM! More music! Now I don’t know the name of this track, but it is the best track on the entire album. I’m not exaggerating… it is DAMN killer! This is hands down the best album I have heard all year… Almost orgasmic people (and I’m being literal here). Enjoy!  [ END ]
