Glenn Hughes

First Underground Nuclear Kitchen (03.25.2008)

Wow! Most definitely not what I was expecting. I am somewhat familiar with Glenn Hughes from his work with Deep Purple and with Black Sabbath’s Tony Iommi, but those are clearly metal records and First Underground Nuclear Kitchen is not! First Underground Nuclear Kitchen is actually an unbelievable mix of Hard Rock, Rhythm, and Blues and a very healthy dose of Funk. I really had to do a double take, so much so, that I went and Googled to see of this was indeed the same Glenn Hughes I had in mind, and I’ll be damned if it isn’t. I had no idea Mr. Hughes had such a remarkable voice and was so versatile. This is a record that gets under your skin and forces you to take notice. The title song is so damn catchy and groove infected it stayed in my head for days.

There are too many really good songs to mention here but a few other that stand out, as being exceptional are two funk-dripping, hip swaying tunes “Love Communion” and “We Go To War.” These songs rival some of the best R&B I have ever heard and are very reminiscent of old Mo-Town stuff. Packed to the gills with horns, great bass lines and groove; both are spectacular.

I have never been that much a fan of sentimental ballads but “Satellite” and “Imperfection” are two very good ones that are included on this disc; and definitely worth mentioning.

“We Shall Be Free” is another song that is worth mentioning because Glenn’s voice is so full of emotion it is sick. Much to my pleasant surprise this disc is fabulous. I would never have thought there was this much depth and talent in Glenn Hughes’s work, the man is extremely gifted and he has created an awfully good CD.  [ END ]
