Down

Over The Under (2007)

Down is the polar opposite of average Southern rock. Yes, they do hail from Louisiana—the heart and soul of Southern rock & roll—but their Southern grit is secondary to their gruff metal sound.

Though Down has been around since 1991, listening to Over The Under has been my first experience with the band. I have heard great things from friends, and all they have said has held true. Over The Under puts you in a musical trance. Rarely do I get so enveloped by an album, but when I listened to Down’s latest, I found myself glued to my chair. It was like an acid trip: incredibly engaging, and WAY too good to be true.

The introduction to “Never Try” is outstanding; in it, guitarist Kirk Windstein becomes one with his axe. Another song that really caught my attention was “N.O.D.”. Once again, it was the introduction that grasped my mind in its powerful grip; however, I also fell in love with this song because it reminded me of Black Sabbath, and for anyone who is familiar with Black Sabbath, it is fairly easy to recognize the influence the band has had on Down.

I am utterly amazed at the effort put into this album; it is clearly not just a jam session gone well. The men of Down put some real thought into their songs. I urge every fan of Black Sabbath to grab Over The Under ASAP!  [ END ]
