I Am The Ocean

…And Your City Needs Swallowing (2007)

…And Your City Needs Swallowing is the debut album from Uprising Records signees, I Am The Ocean, and when I sat down and listened to it I had so many mixed feelings about it.

My first thought was that they sounded just like any other hardcore band that’s around nowadays; but then I heard the vocal delivery in each song – from screams to spoken words. The guitar riffs are timeless, and the effects are really neat as well.

I carried on listening as the tracks started to grow on me. Some of the songs are long though! A few are close to seven minutes in length, which isn’t a problem, but they have mediocre instrumental breakdowns that just didn’t keep me interested and made me want to skip to the next tune. But once I strived through the two minutes of blah, they busted out melodies that weren’t hard to enjoy. Nonetheless, each track is infused with hardcore metal explosions, and they all seem to have their pros and cons.

Sounding generic with a touch of individualism, I Am The Ocean did pretty good with their debut album, but one that I can’t make up my mind whether or not to keep on heavy rotation.  [ END ]
