Eagles of Death Metal – “Zipper Down” [Album Review]
Eagles of Death Metal continue to knock out some great rock n’ roll. Zipper Down doesn’t take life too seriously, if you share that same attitude, come and join the party!
Eagles of Death Metal is the work of friends Jesse Hughes and Josh Homme (of QOTSA fame) and Zipper Down is their first work in nearly seven years. However, listening to the tongue-in-cheek schtick of Zipper Down it’s nice to see that the pair haven’t strayed much outside the EODM zone despite a seven year gap.
But, this is exactly how you want an Eagles of Death Metal record to sound. A mix of garage rock and proper rock n’ roll from when your dad was a kid, songs like “Complexity” and “Got The Power” have got it all. They’ve got a sleazy swagger, they’ve got attitude, and they’ve also got a massive smile plastered across them. Zipper Down, from the artwork to the lyrics to the vibe, is a record that doesn’t take itself seriously at all.
Helped by a production job that leaves the music on Zipper Down like it was meant to sound – natural and real, the Eagles of Death Metal have knocked out ten/eleven songs without a care in the world. Even their cover of Duran Duran’s “Save A Prayer” has that familiar rock n’ roll EODM vibe to it while still retaining that poptastic Duran Duran hook throughout.
Amidst a sea of mediocrity, it’s great to see a band like Eagles of Death Metal who are nothing more than a bunch of mates having a laugh while knocking out some great rock n’ roll songs. Zipper Down doesn’t take life too seriously, if you share that same attitude, come and join the party!
