Let Cara Frew Elevate You with Her “Weightless” Music Video [Premiere]
It may have taken about five years, but the wait was certainly worth it for Cara Frew’s brand new music video for “Weightless.” The single comes from Frew’s 2016 Come Close to Me EP, a collaboration with Stefan Skarbek, renowned for his work with Amy Winehouse, and producer Daniel Heath who helped compose most of Lana Del Rey’s monstrous Born To Die record. The very scenic music video was shot in the Newlands Forest in Cape Town, South Africa, Frew’s home country, on a perfect day for a video shoot, with the glimmers of sunlight providing for the perfect backdrop.
Light and whimsical in nature, the song combines Frew’s elegant vocals with a downtempo melody that creates a unique, floaty atmosphere that feels nearly celestial. It’s the beginning of an evolution for the artist, as she has used these uncertain times to focus more on herself. She has been focusing on her emotions and using them positively to spark creativity within herself. It all comes as part of a larger, more ambitious project that she is currently invested in, with an EP on the way in the coming months.
With some words on her new single, Frew said, “Along with the rest of the world, I have been longing for connection during a year unlike any other. With Daniel Heath’s cinematic production approach, ‘Weightless’ transports us to that floating feeling of elevated love, the beauty of mixed emotions gone wild, an absorbing lust in a chaotic world, and the comfort we find in each other despite how imperfect we know our love is. It’s the perfect escape. I cannot wait to share my music with you and follow it up with an EP that will be released later this year.”
The South African-born Frew began to really come into her own with the 2018 release of her debut album Flame, issued globally through Sony Music Entertainment. It produced two hit singles, “Free” and “You Got Me,” both of which have been streamed tens of millions of times on SoundCloud and Spotify. That commercial success helped her gain the attention of UK band The Script who had her open for them on the South African leg of their global tour. Frew has also worked with the highly regarded DJ and producer Black Coffee, collaborating on the 2015 single “I’ll Find You.” That collaboration helped get her on the bill for Ultra Music Festival Miami, Ultra Music Festival South Africa, and Sónar Johannesburg. An academic as well, she had the pleasure of studying at the Berklee College of Music.
It’s all been hard-earned, but well deserved for the dynamic Cara Frew with many more accolades sure to come.
