Hull based band Deadset take the listener down a darker route with their new single “Heavy Eyes.” A track which explores themes of mental health and addiction, the band utilise a sound which fluctuates between a morbid sadness and palpitating anger to emphasise the unpredictable, unsteady impact birthed by poor mental health.

Exploring the battle with mental health and addiction, the single sees the band tackling how the two can bleed into relationships leaving a devastating and fatal aftermath.

The single comes accompanied by a suitably gritty video which you can check out here:

One of the earliest tracks written by Adam Arnold, the bassist explains how, despite initial resistance from the band, the song soon became the cornerstone for their sound.

“‘Heavy Eyes was the first song I came to Deadset with. I was listening to Spiderland by Slint on repeat at this point. I wanted to recreate that jarring juxtaposition of tempos and riffs that are synonymous with their sound. Obviously in a more commercial sense. At this point however James and Sam had a completely different direction in mind. “Heavy Eyes” was my attempt to change that. I’m sure they hated it at first and it took a lot of persuasion. But now it’s a cornerstone of our sound and a constant reference for me.”

The single is out now Man Demolish Records and you can find out more about Deadset through their socials here.

I have an unhealthy obsession with bad horror movies, the song Wanted Dead Or Alive and crap British game shows. I do this not because of the sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll lifestyle it affords me but more because it gives me an excuse to listen to bands that sound like hippos mating.
