“Dear diary: Some high energy, no-nonsense punk-minded rock would go really good about now…”

Ask, and you shall receive. Civil Rebellion has let loose their brand new single, “Teenage Anthem,” today, which is the first single to the act’s debut full-length record Dear Diary, coming your way on January 20th. This song has all of the great staples of a teenage punk song; the energy, the attitude, the almost childlike vocal and point of view… And it’s all coming from one Noah Wossene, the young man behind Civil Rebellion, who himself just recently graduated high school and obviously knows a thing or two about being young, and the realities and pressures that accompany that. Dear Diary is his repudiation of societal rules and norms that are merely in place to hold us back from being who we are really meant to be.

Regarding “Teenage Anthem,” Wossene says:

“‘Teenage Anthem’ is… well… An anthem! From blaring words about just being you and not listening to the same bullshit people want to fill your mind with. ‘Teenage Anthem’ was written with the idea of excepting the reality that, you WILL make mistakes and WILL hit the ground. But that’s what’s supposed to happen! If someone scolds you for it, my advice to you is this… SCREAM THIS BLARING ‘TEENAGE ANTHEM!’”

There’s a specific intent behind Wossene’s vision for Civil Rebellion; restore the energy and carefreeness of music’s past. In his view, rock music, particularly the live gig, is just not the same anymore. It just doesn’t have the same unabashed joy that it used to have. Dear Diary is meant to conjure up memories of the good old days when you’d walk out of a small club after having seen a band play with nothing but positive feelings of contentment and satisfaction.

One of his specific goals as a musician is to chronicle what it’s like being a teenager coasting into adulthood and what that means. Some of it you gotta go with, but some of it is worth fighting back against. That’s Wossene’s intention with this album, a snapshot in time of what it’s like trying to get on with things while everything just seems meant to hold you back.
