THE HOWLIN’ SOULS Share How They Made the Awesome “Free & Young” Music Video
New York’s The Howlin’ Souls discuss the creation of the music video for their ripping single “Free & Young.”
New York’s The Howlin’ Souls issued their recent self-titled EP (which can be purchased iTunes) on April 28th and they’ve never looked back. Ripping single “Free & Young” has been peaking interest and perking ears ever since and on July 28 the guys dropped a music video there of. Fortunately for you, the gang hit us up with some info about the video.
Who was involved in the shoot?
Pete Smith: Robbie (bass) did most of the live action shooting. Pete (guitar, vocals) shot a bunch of B-roll footage that went along with the lyrics of the song. Some shots are from New York, Austin, Arizona, and LA. Pete then edited the video together.
How long it took?
Smith: It was three days of shooting spaced out over a month or so. Pete then edited it all together over the course of a week.
Any cool stories from the set?
Smith: To achieve the slo-mo effect on Pete’s downtown stroll while singing, Robbie had to double the speed of the song and have Pete sing along. When he cut the speed in half, the video started to have a lot of attitude and swagger. The best day of shooting was with the model casting. We were very fortunate to have these amazing models dance around and let loose in front of the camera. They all had such strong looks and they embodied the spirit of the song.
For the uninitiated, drummer Nate Lang played Carl Tanner in the Oscar-winning movie Whiplash, not to mention he was also actually Miles Teller’s drum coach. The band, who take their namesake from Howlin’ Wolf, co-produced the new EP with Fritz Lang, long-time engineer at CBGBs, Record Plant NYC and Sigma NYC.
