I recently had the opportunity to speak with guitarist Dave Whitaker of the North Carolina-based alternative hard rock band Another Lost Year about the favorite piece of gear in his arsenal. The band has been carving out a niche and making a name for themselves through lots of hard work and touring, including having shared the stage with bands the likes of Sevendust, Sick Puppies, and Candlebox. Here is what Whitaker had to say.
What one piece of gear do you use to obtain your signature sound?
Whitaker: I use a S2 Custom 24 from Paul Reed Smith Guitars.
What about it makes it so important to you?
Whitaker: It’s one of those guitars I just can’t replace. No matter how much money I have.
What are the pros and cons?
Whitaker: Pros are that it very versatile and light. It likes having an ace in the hole. When I can’t grasp the sound I’m looking for, I know I can always grab it and nail what I was hearing in my head. The weight is great as well. Light enough to sling around on stage, but just heavy enough to have a rich tone.
How long have you had it and would you ever change it out?
Whitaker: Not long now. Maybe a few months. It’s like owning a Lamborghini, once you’ve had one you really can’t go back to anything else. I wouldn’t change anything about it. Maybe a different color… in the same model and having two.
Any final thoughts on the gear?
Whitaker: If you get a chance to stop by the PRS website, check the S2s out. It’s a great guitar you won’t be disappointed with and you can keep your lunch money for a rainy day.
