Despite Exile – “Scarlet Reverie” [EP]
Usually when one thinks of metalcore our minds focus on North America; this is after all where the style was birthed and developed. Udine, Italy act Despite Exile may break that traditional thought pattern however, as their album Scarlet Reverie is a wondrous metalcore offering in the vein of several Massachusetts-area pioneers.

This six song sampler has both heavy instrumentals and melodic guitar overlays; plus when the timing is right, Despite Exile bring in some progressive/death metal influences that further thicken their sound. The vocals are delivered in a limited range of growls and screams, but they do serve to make the songs more aggressive-sounding. After listening to Scarlet Reverie I’m very surprised Despite Exile are an independent band with no help from any labels. Someone needs to snatch up these Italians fast ’cause they kick some serious ass.
