Many bands are eager to quickly follow their first album with a second release. Arizona group, Eyes Set To Kill, did just that. A year after their chart hitting album Reach made its appearance on shelves, the band released their slightly mellower follow up The World Outside.

Based on their first album, one might think that this record would again focus on Eyes Set To Kill’s sisters Alexia and Anissa Rodriguez. The band’s latest release, The World Outside however, shines a spotlight on the other three members of the band; Brandon Anderson, Caleb Clifton and Greg Kerwin. Heavy breaking parts mixed with soft melodic parts helps create the key sound of this united group.

The album begins with their first single “Heights”, a full band breakdown with Brandon Anderson’s scream overlay leading into a harmonization of Brandon and Alexia Rodriguez’s singing. This harmonization is a key formula used by the band. It was also evident on their last record and was especially featured on the single “Darling”. The World Outside further demonstrates the formula with melodic choruses of Alexia Rodriguez singing with either her sister Anissa or Brandon as backup.

It is a simple formula that you can’t get tired of. For a bit of variation the track “Interlude” is a piano solo as is the track “The Hollow, Pt. 1”, the intro for the song “The Hollow”. The final song on the album “Come Home” is also performed on the piano and is accompanied by Alexia Rodriguez singing. A good concluding song that calms the listener down after such a exciting album.

A fun fact about The World Outside, the song “Deadly Weapons” features the popular vocalist from the post hardcore scene, Craig Mabbit (Escape The Date/The World Alive/Blessthefall), also from Arizona. This album is full of hardcore rifts interspersed with melodic parts. Fans of hardcore, metal, screamo, post hardcore and even pop rock could really get into this record. I would recommend this band to fans of Escape The Fate, Blessthefall, The Devil Wears Prada and Alesana.  [ END ]
