Album Review
Street Sweeper Social Club
Self-Titled (06.16.2009)
The self-titled release from Street Sweeper Social Club is one hell of a good disc. Rap- Metal is certainly nothing new; there have been many bands who have melded the two genres together with a decent amount of success. I feel this disc however kicks things up a notch and takes it to a more modern, next level.
From the very first track “Fight! Smash! Win!,” Street Sweeper Social Club prove they mean business. Funky bass rhythms drive the song forward while killer guitar riffs and rapping are layered over top. The songs are also particularly catchy and in no time at all I found myself singing along with them. A good example of this is the chorus in “Good Morning Mrs. Smith”; it really got under my skin.
The bands influences are quite varied and they draw from many different musical genres including Funk, Metal and Rap. On more than one occasion, things got so funky that I was reminded quite strongly of The Red Hot Chili Peppers.
There are lots of solid tracks on this CD, but the ones that stood out the most to me are “The Oath,” “Clap For Killahs” and “Promenade.” By far though, my favorite track on this disc is “Somewhere In The World It’s Midnight.” This tune has such an infectious groove it is guaranteed to get you out of your seat and moving. “Megablast” is yet another really good tune that starts with a very heavy, very captivating, guitar line and proves to be one of the heaviest moments on the disc.
Admittedly, I am a big fan of this sort of fusion, genre-crossing music. I think this record is top notch. Quite honestly, I could not find anything I did not like about it. Street Sweeper Social Club is fresh, fun and exciting. There is something on this disc for just about everyone. Even the none Rage Against The Machine fans. [ END ]
