Dressed Up & In Line (11.20.2007)
Dressed Up & In Line is a collection of indie band Copeland’s B-sides, acoustic versions, and remixes. Copeland is a perfectly serviceable pop rock band, but there is nothing on here that sets them apart from other similar bands like Cartel or The Fray. I enjoyed the acoustic version of “Brightest”, a slower, pretty ballad, as well as a cover of The Police’s “Every Breath You Take” and a pretty badass cover of Soundgarden’s “Black Hole Sun”.
“Black Hole Sun”, especially, is a welcome shot of adrenaline on an otherwise solidly mid-tempo album. It’s probably a bad sign when the best songs on an album are covers. Other offerings like “That Awful Memory Of Yours” and “May I Have This Dance” are pretty painful to listen to, although they could just be the kind of songs that get better with every subsequent listen.
I have to give Copeland credit; they can go easily from a rock sound (“Black Hole Sun”) to a softer, acoustic sound (“Brightest”) without breaking a sweat. The dichotomy here makes Dressed Up & In Line more interesting. The lead singer’s voice is really pleasant to listen to as well. If tamer, rock that utilizes acoustic guitar and piano is your thing, you will most likely enjoy the album. If you’re looking for something harder and more dynamic, skip this one. [ END ]
