Album Review
ExInferis
Hidjama (02.15.2008)
Just about everyday, a new metalcore band is formed. This trend is beginning to bother a lot of people, to be honest it just plain old pisses some people off. Some new bands are original, or cross a different genre creating a unique new sound, but far too many of these new bands sound all too similar. Unfortunately, ExInferis doesn’t have much to offer when it comes to originality. Sure they are a tight band, with a great new EP, but it just seems like it’s been done before.’
Their latest EP is titled Hidjama and despite having a decent recording quality, that doesn’t make up for sounding just like the average (and seemingly ever present) metalcore band. Don’t get me wrong, the music is damn decent, but it just doesn’t have anything new to offer. I guess something somewhat interesting is the band’s massive use of symbolism in their writing style. Lines such as: “becoming a worthless envelope for a prophecy wrapped in a message of hope” do have a certain quality that makes you say “cool.” However, lyrics are only a small part of what makes a good band.
Ok, maybe I am being a little harsh here, after all this band is relatively new and is trying damn hard to make a name for themselves. That said, they have come a long way in a short time, and a lot of that has come in the even shorter time since their last self-released record. But at the end of the day… come on! Drop something I haven’t heard before.
Like the average metalcore band, the main theme of the EP is pain and suffering… yet again something that has been well over-done. There isn’t really anything that stood out for me aside from a few interesting lyrics. I would recommend this EP to somebody who doesn’t want anything new or mind-blowing and is a big fan of traditional metalcore. [ END ]
