The Black Dahlia Murder

Nocturnal (2007)

The Black Dahlia Murder (TBDM) have been providing music fans with their unique style of melodic death metal for about eight years now. In that time, the band has made some incredible and memorable songs, including “Contagion”, “The Blackest Incarnation” and “A Vulgar Picture”, and with their third full-length, Nocturnal, TBDM continue their awe-inspiring streak.

The first single off Nocturnal, “What A Horrible Night To Have A Curse”, is quite unique compared to TBDM’s previous work: it has a fade-in intro and a subtle mechanical feel to it. The vocals on the track are a little more familiar, however, converting back and forth between higher pitched screams to low, demonic growls. The arrangements are linear, as per usual, but that could be due to the mechanical influence.

My favourite track was “I Worship Only What You Bleed”. The composition is akin to the TBDM I know and love: heavy, fast, and FULL of break-downs. You can definitely notice the band’s growth over the past eight years when comparing this track to songs off their first album. The musicianship is insane: sick guitar skill, perfect drums, mind-bending bass, and the usual bone-chilling vocals. Up until now, my favourite track was their cover of “Paint It Black”, but I think I’ve changed my mind.

The entire album lives up to the band’s reputation, and even surpasses their old albums in most aspects. I recommend Nocturnal to ALL TBDM, Neaera, and The Agony Scene fans.  [ END ]
