From A Second Story Window

In the past couple of years one of the biggest genres to explode onto the music scene is that of “screamo,” “hardcore” and “post hardcore.”

There is a fine line that separates the good from the bad. From A Second Story Window lean towards the good in this case.

People are usually quick to pass judgment on “screaming” and tend to overlook the musical talent supporting the vocals. There is no doubt that these 4 musicians can play, and their singer can sing… when you can understand him in the melodic parts.

I couldn’t personally listen to an entire album of screaming because it’s not my cup of tea, but I can appreciate the showmanship of the band, the melodic bits in-between singing and everything in between.

Tracks 1 through 7 are pretty much loud, in your face, fast paced, and lots of screaming. But that all comes to a halt on track 8, “Ghosts Over Japan.” Commencing with piano and a more melodic approach to singing, their talent does shine through, and opens a new door to other fans that like this type of piano rock like song. This is my favourite song on the record, because I can understand the lyrics, and I can feel the piano running through my veins.

If you know anything about me know that I love to read the damn liner notes in their entirety, from the lyrics right through to the thank yous, and production etc….

What’s interesting about the liner notes in this case is that the lyrics are laid out in dialogue form, which I am seeing for the first time. I think the idea is pretty damn cool! It makes you think a little more, and while people are probably more into the music, there are people out there who are always searching for a different meaning.

7.5 second story windows out of 10.  [ END ]
