Oakland, California-based rock outfit Greg Hoy & the Boys recently released their latest EP, Holy Mother of God, a pop-punk-flavoured collection of songs inspired by The Hives and The Kinks.

Holy Mother of God features two awesome guests: Eddie Spaghetti of The Supersuckers, one of rock n’ roll’s underrated songwriters and icons, took the title of the song and wrote an entirely new story from a different perspective. And as a joke, the band decided to cut a tongue-in-cheek ‘upbeat’ version titled “Holy Mother of Ska,” featuring veteran ska icon Dave Sharma, drummer of the The Skalars, to play on it.

Right now, Greg Hoy & the Boys are on tour. They will share the stage with Richard Reilly of ’80s punk outfit Victims on the east coast leg.

Comprising four tracks, entry points on Holy Mother of God include the title track, with its Kinks-like guitars conjuring up hints of “You Really Got Me” and Paul Revere & The Raiders’ “Just Like Me.” Raw and slightly sleazy, the melody provides the perfect matrix for Hoy’s voice, which is in fine form here.

Eddie’s Spaghetti Western Version,” a personal favourite, glides forth on low-slung textures reminiscent of Ennio Morricone merged with traces of Chris Isaak-like suavity. Whereas “Holy Mother of Ska” bounces with jangly, skiffing guitars atop a pushing, galvanizing rhythm.

Although based around pop-punk, Holy Mother of God is one of Greg Hoy & the Boys’ best with its various stylistic facets.
