Eric Steckel – ‘Grandview Drive’ [Album Review]
When you first tune in to Eric Steckel’s new album, Grandview Drive, what you hear is fire, passion, and amplifiers exploding from running hard and being laid out wet. The guy’s one of the new ringers in the guitar world, without crossing borders and sounding like his contemporaries. It’s a breath of fresh air inhaled deeply before hitting them streets a running.
Grandview Drive twists and turns through eleven avenues comprised of blues, hard rock, and grand funk, and “Take My Love to Town” is the spark to the engine that ignites all things and sets us up for a raucous ride. The cool thing about Eric Steckel is he doesn’t pigeonhole himself into one sound, which gives the manifolds time to cool down before shifting into the next gear.
“Same Old Blues” is the perfect late-night pit stop pulling your guitar out of the trunk for the last call improv. But “You Never Will” is the swing in your best gal’s swing set in the backseat full of fun and love before landing on “Solid Ground.”
I think Eric has finally found his sound on Grandview Drive and this, of course, is not time-sensitive and takes a few spins to set in before the voodoo dice is spun around the rearview mirror of love, life, and your point of view.
