Derek Simpson – “wonka” [Song Review]
Dressed in an almost ethereal coloration that floats like a reverie, Derek Simpson’s “wonka” supplies the mysterious mood surrounding love.
Artist, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Derek Simpson shares his new single and lyric video, “wonka.” The song portrays love as a risky, perplexing excursion of self-exposure and doubt.
Simpson explains, “It’s an unsafe place you go to when you allow yourself to be in love. You’re on exhibition all the time. And no matter your choices, you’re exposed.”
Based in Los Angeles, Simpson’s starting point was Boston. He’s appeared in many elite media outlets and his music has been featured in Comedy Central’s series Workaholics, as well as the film The Wheel, starring Amber Midhunter.
Derek Simpson’s sound hovers somewhere between shoegaze and dream-pop, with dollops of spacy guitars and psychedelic, wraithlike synth lines. Along with writing and producing most of his songs, he has produced music for Kevin Abstract, Dom McLennon, and Rockie Fresh. He also directed and edited the lyric video for “wonka.”
Akin to a gliding slow dance, “wonka” opens on a gentle melody, swaying unhurriedly as Simpson’s delicate, low voice imbues the lyrics with vulnerability and intimations of the surprising magical feelings he is experiencing. Suffused with the effluvium of an array of unidentifiable emotions, the harmonics mirror the multiple, elusive sensations.
Dressed in almost ethereal coloration that floats like a reverie, “wonka” supplies the mysterious mood surrounding love.
