Erik & The Worldly Savages – ‘FUTURE THUNDER VOID’ [EP] [Album Review]
Vaguely reminiscent of Ennio Morricone tinted with punk-lite aromas, Erik & The Worldly Savages’ ‘FUTURE THUNDER VOID’ displays a contagious, reckless dynamism.
Talking about Erik & The Worldly Savage’s latest EP, guitarist/vocalist Erik Mut says, “Written in Thailand and Mexico, FUTURE THUNDER VOID takes place after the events of the previous Break Free EP. It describes the different sensations and feelings of a nomadic life in the modern world. It shows you how confusing, empowering, and hopeful it can be.”
Mut knows whereof he speaks. An ex-pat since 2008, Erik left his home in Toronto, Canada, at the age of 25 to let the cultures of the world wash over him, inspiring his life, work, and music. In 2008, while he was in Belgrade, Serbia, Mut formed Erik & The Worldly Savages, followed by performing 250 shows across Europe.
True to his ethos, in 2016, Mut started Support Adventure, a company providing remote jobs to ex-pats and digital nomads, expressing the band’s message of trans-culturalism.
Encompassing six tracks, FUTURE THUNDER VOID begins with “Thunder In Our Hearts,” opening on Spaghetti-western tones, followed by the entry of Mut’s dark, edgy vocals backed by a surging brass section.
Mut explains, “The single ‘Thunder In Our Hearts’ covers what it means to recognize your own individuality and how it feels to broadcast that to the world; it speaks to those who believe in embracing the beat of their own drum without sacrificing success.”
Entry points include the Spanish-laced intro of “Scarcity,” which transitions to a folk-punk melody dripping with exotic layers of sound riding a staccato rhythm. Lush brass accents imbue the tune with vibrant colours and delicious modulations.
Perhaps the best track on the EP, “Future,” features a syncopated rhythm, strumming guitars, and brilliant waves of brass as Mut’s sleazy, rasping voice infuses the lyrics with the longing of humanity for something new and different.
Vaguely reminiscent of Ennio Morricone tinted with punk-lite aromas, FUTURE THUNDER VOID displays a contagious, reckless dynamism.
