Red Bird Rising – “My Revolution” (ft. Taras Kuznetsov) [Song Review]
Juxtaposed against the visceral aggression of the images, Red Bird Rising’s “My Revolution” (ft. Taras Kuznetsov) channels the emotional cost of war on individuals and society.
Red Bird Rising, the musical alias utilized by Diedrich Donald Weiss, recently released the single/music video “My Revolution,” featuring Taras Kuznetsov, a freelance vocalist, producer, arranger, audio engineer, drummer, and pianist in Ukraine.
Red Bird Rising explains the song’s genesis, “I have a world-worn faith in the power of music to affect people’s lives positively. It’s from this place that inspired me to write ‘My Revolution’ in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. It may be naive to think a song could in any way substantially affect something as dominating as this horror, yet it was my answer to the inner question, ‘what can I do?’”
A monumental project because of distance and the war, Taras recorded his vocals and the bassline, played by his wife, Ana Pshokina, in his Odessa studio. Once all tracking was complete, Mariano Cukierman, who played guitars, synths, electric piano, and organ on the song, handled the mixing.
“My Revolution” opens on the blare of sirens flowing into a riveting polyrhythm topped by smoldering, gleaming leitmotifs of guitar feedback. Taras’ cashmere vocals imbue the lyrics with passion, resolve, and quixotic savors, especially on the soft, shimmering bridge.
“If it wasn’t for you, you are enough, my love / I can’t just go along, I can’t just sing this song / My revolution, my revolution begins / My revolution, my revolution begins in my world within.”
The opening scene of the video, shot by Taras from his Odessa apartment, injects the visuals with the stark reality of war. Dance scenes shot by filmmaker Flor Giardino in Buenos Aires of choreographer and dancer Melina Ascune convey the interior, yawning abyss of furor accompanying the setting.
Juxtaposed against the visceral aggression of the images, “My Revolution” channels the emotional cost of war on individuals and society.
