The Deepest Sea,” the latest single from songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Myles Cochran, is from his forthcoming album, You Are Here, which Cochran describes as “songs that just happen to not have words.” You Are Here drops on July 26.

Cochran, who refers to himself as a “displaced Kentuckian,” lives in the UK, dividing his time between Devon and East London. According to Cochran, he didn’t listen to much country music while growing up in Kentucky. Yet later, when he began writing songs, country music informed his sound, which he depicts as “a blurry amalgam of twang, jazz, folk, and chamber elements.”

Cochran says about the track, “‘The Deepest Sea’ started as an actual song — i.e., with lyrics and singing. It’ll eventually be a song again, but I liked this version so that’s how it wound up. “

“The Deepest Sea” opens on shimmering guitars that ooze elusive hints of melancholy, drifting and floating, and then nearly vanishing before once again resurfacing like ghostly tendrils, giving the tune myriad layers of gentle coloration. At once soft and elegant, there’s a hoary nuance to the textures, imbuing the melody with delicious finesse and halcyon charm.
