Grouplove Get Bombastic at Boston’s MGM Music Hall at Fenway [Photos]
Grouplove took over Boston’s MGM Music Hall at Fenway on March 29th with solo act Bully, and the band was totally bombastic!

Grouplove took over Boston’s MGM Music Hall at Fenway on March 29th with solo act Bully. This was the American alternative rock band’s next-to-last stop along their “Rock and Roll You Won’t Save Me” tour, which finished in New York the following night. The tour celebrated several years of Grouplove’s greatest hits from across their six studio albums.
The night opened with Bully, a solo project by German-born singer/songwriter Alicia Bognanno. Her impressive vocals were backed by her instrumental talent on guitar and piano. The nine-song indie rock set was a perfect beginning to an ecstatic night.
Grouplove began the night with “Close Your Eyes and Count to Ten,” with main vocals coming from singer/guitarist Christian Zucconi, who took turns with singer Hannah Hooper for lead vocals throughout the night. The two singers are married, and their chemistry is undeniable on stage. They sang in each other’s embrace and playfully danced back and forth through hits like “Ways to Go” and crowd favorite “Tongue Tied.”
The crowd screamed the famous 2011 hit’s chorus with ease when the microphone was faced their way. It was easily the highlight of the night. The band’s energy was tangible and didn’t waver throughout their entire 22-song set, and their lighting reflected such. With rapid color changes and intense strobes, it was impossible not to jump to the beat. The band closed out the set with an encore of “Itchin’ on a Photograph,” “Raspberry,” and “Colors.”
I was very much looking forward to this show since the tour’s announcement. Their 2011 debut album Never Trust a Happy Song was my first record on vinyl. Hearing it live for the first time was better than I could have imagined. Although the tour is over, Grouplove will be playing several festivals this summer before heading back on tour with P!NK in the fall so there’s plenty of time to catch this energetic bunch.
