There is so much chatter these days about freedom, expression, and identity, so it’s not a surprise that these topics have been heavily on the mind of Brie Stoner. Today, the singer-songwriter unveils her new single “Magdalene” off her latest record, Me Veo. With that album due out May 3rd, “Magdalene” indicates the hazy dream rock, pensive approach she has taken with her new offering.

Like many people, the pandemic helped Stoner refocus on what was important to her. Feeling cut off and isolated, she returned to songwriting to quench her thirst for self-expression. Artistically, it turned into a very productive period for her. She felt emboldened to ride waves of inspiration, no matter how they came along.

Dreamy and so full of different songwriting styles, Stoner has the following to say about “Magdalene:”

“I grew up in a pretty religious context, so ‘Magdalene’ is my confessional, my most honest, raw, and furious telling of my experience as a woman in the confines of Christianity. The song is a liberation manifesto, a feminine unapologetic genuflection to being fleshy and feeling free from the confines of patriarchal, pontifical ideologies.

The song originally was written on piano, and in the studio morphed into a production with ’60s French new wave jabbing electric guitars, haunting background vocals and a ’70s crazy horse rock and roll solo into the sunset. The song feels triumphant, strong in its vulnerability and unapologetic in the delivery…and I’m really proud of that ‘soft strength’ signature.”

On the whole, Me Veo is Stoner’s ruminations on identity. The term me veo in Spanish translates to “I see myself.” The record is about freeing yourself from labels, embracing your identity, and being who and what you want. It’s a celebration of sorts, of the human spirit and of the freedom to expose yourself in a spiritual sense. Stoner demonstrates great vulnerability as she navigates her way through this record. It’s a set of songs that feel like they have been inside of her for her whole life. It happened that it all came together correctly at the right time.

As a child, Stoner always felt like she was being told she was one thing or another, and that shaped so much of her identity. Me Veo is her way of rebelling against that line of thinking, declaring that she is more than just one thing with an identity that can be whatever she wants it to be.
